About the project

The existing TC Building at the Swinburne University of Technology was to undergo expansion and refurbishment through a build-out of existing external central atrium and specific room refurbishments, covering three levels and the roof.

The new build-out of the atrium space included a new superlab, new breakout and staff offices, a new geotech workshop, a new loading bay and new computer labs and general classrooms. The refurbished space included a future work demonstration laboratory, a PLC lab, a laser assisted lab, and a refurbished classroom.

The Task

Drafting Solutions was enlisted to install new mechanical services, consisting of fan coil units, exhaust systems, Nederman arms and all associated ductwork and pipework.

The Challenge

The existing building provided a limited capacity to fit services within the ceiling space. At the same time, there was another external drafter working on half of the building in AutoCAD, not Revit, which presented other challenges, such as how to interface with him.

The Solution

Using 3D Revit models, we were able to identify problem areas in terms of coordination and ensure these issues were tackled early in the project. This provided the maximum amount of time to resolve any issues. We liaised with the other drafter in order to ensure our drawings lined up as much as possible. We also coordinated as much as possible in the model to align our services and ensure the best outcome for the project.
